Not All Weight Loss in Diabetes Is Good News. Many people with diabetes feel happy when the scale starts moving down. But here's the important question: What exactly are you losing?
Weight loss in diabetes can happen for three very different reasons.
1. Fat Loss: This is the outcome you want. Your waist size decreases, energy improves, and you feel healthier overall.
2. Water Loss: When blood sugar levels remain very high, the body tries to remove excess sugar through urine. This often leads to frequent urination, dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and a sudden drop of 2–4 kg over a short period.
3. Muscle (Protein) Loss: This is the most dangerous and the most overlooked. Sunken cheeks, Thinner arms and legs, Weakness while climbing stairs. Reduced strength and stamina.
Many people think they're losing fat when they're actually losing muscle. This tends to happen gradually when blood sugars remain uncontrolled, protein intake is low, strength training is missing, sleep is poor, and stress remains high. Weight loss in diabetes can be Fat loss, Water loss, or Muscle loss.
Only one of them is a sign of improving health. The number on the scale matters less than understanding what your body is actually losing. If you or a loved one has diabetes and is losing weight unexpectedly, don't just celebrate the weight loss. Understand the cause.
