Your children will grow and so should you. Build a life that has room for you, too. Children grow up and become independent. Family responsibilities change. Your health, interests and sense of purpose deserve attention through every phase.
Here are five skills I encourage everybody to develop
1. Learn to earn something of your own.
It could begin with tuitions, baking or a neighborhood tiffin service. It
doesn’t have to become a large business or relate to your degree.
Earning through a skill of your own can help you discover abilities you haven’t
used in years.
2. Understand your own nutritional needs.
Your growing child, active husband and ageing parents may all need different
portions and nutrients. Your needs deserve the same consideration.
Pay attention to the protein in your daily meals, especially if you’re
vegetarian. Get guidance on an amount suited to your health and activity.
3. Learn to exercise independently.
Company is lovely. But when your walking partner cancels, your movement needn’t
disappear from the calendar.
Find an activity you enjoy and build the confidence to keep showing up for
yourself.
4. Understand whether fasting is suitable for you.
Fasting is optional, and it isn’t suitable for everyone. If you want to explore
it, seek medical guidance first, especially if you have diabetes or take
medication.
5. Find joy beyond your family roles.
Return to an old interest. Learn something new. Reconnect with your profession.
Join a community where people get to know you through your interests.
You can love your family deeply and still want something that belongs to you. You don’t need to wait until everyone needs you less to begin.
