Is Diabetes making your skin itch?

It could be something as simple as dry skin or a warning sign of a more serious complication. There are four possible causes you need to understand, because the treatment for each is different.

1. Dry skin: High blood sugar and dehydration can leave your skin extremely dry and itchy.
Apply a good moisturizer immediately after bathing and keep your blood sugar under control.

2. Fungal infections: If the itching is between your toes, around your groin, or under your breasts, a fungal infection could be responsible.
Keep the affected area clean and dry. Avoid applying regular moisturizers to the infected area. Antifungal creams or oral medicines may be needed under medical guidance.

3. Nerve damage (Neuropathy): Now, this is where we need to be more careful.
If you experience itching, tingling, or unusual sensations without any visible rash, nerve damage could be one possible reason.
Get your vitamin B12 levels and nerve health evaluated. Depending on the diagnosis, medicines like pregabalin or gabapentin may be prescribed by your doctor.

4. Kidney complications: This is a more serious possibility, especially when itching becomes widespread, persistent, and particularly troublesome at night.
Impaired kidney function can contribute to severe itching, although itching alone does not mean you have kidney disease.
A detailed kidney evaluation is important to identify the cause and begin appropriate treatment.

Don’t keep applying creams or taking medicines without understanding why your skin is itching.
Whether it’s dry skin, a fungal infection, nerve damage, or kidney complications, identifying and treating the underlying cause is what matters.
