Sugar isn’t the real problem here. We often demonize it, but understanding its role matters more. Sugar actually solves three things in our lives
1. It solves hunger crises
2. It satisfies post-meal cravings
3. It provides our dopamine fix
The first two stem from insulin resistance and leptin resistance. Both hormones
are meant to signal hunger and satiety. When you're resistant to both, you don't get proper feedback and keep eating
with sugar being the most convenient and tasty option.
About dopamine - It's not just one aspect of life. From social media to
shopping to instant gratifications - sugar fits perfectly into this economy.
So how do we break free?
For insulin/leptin issues → Nothing beats 5-7 kgs of fat loss. Lose visceral
fat, do some fasting, eat less. In 2-3 months, your sugar cravings will
decrease as insulin levels drop.
For dopamine detox → This is more critical. We need to recalibrate many aspects
of our instant-gratification lifestyle social media, impulse buying, and yes,
sugar.
If you keep ice cream and chocolates in the fridge, only mutants won't reach
for them daily. I'm not one of them. If I stock them, they're gone in two days. Order treats occasionally, don't stock them.
It's not about demonizing one ingredient. Sugar is simply one of the best
dopamine sources available. Understanding this is half the battle won.
P.S. What's your biggest sugar trigger?
