Thyroid Issue: Main Sources

Thyroid tablets aren’t the problem....

The explosive rise in hypothyroidism today is often blamed on genetics. But in reality, most modern thyroid issues are metabolic, especially in women. I see this frequently after pregnancy, weight gain, prolonged stress, or infections. Yes, thyroid tablets are important. They help you function. But tablets alone don’t address why the thyroid isn’t working optimally.

Here’s what’s actually going wrong

1. The liver–thyroid connection is ignored → The inactive thyroid hormone (T4) must convert into the active form (T3). Nearly 70–80% of this conversion happens in the liver. A fatty liver simply cannot do this efficiently. Insulin resistance worsens this higher insulin increases fatty liver and blocks T3 action at the cellular level.

2. Stress disrupts hormone signaling → Chronic emotional stress, late nights, and poor sleep can convert T4 into Reverse T3. Reverse T3 occupies the receptor but doesn’t perform thyroid actions hormone is present, impact is not.

3. Long-term nutrient depletion matters → Low protein, selenium, zinc, and iodine impair hormone production and activation. Even RO water, over time, may contribute by reducing trace minerals (not the cause, but a factor).

4. Post-viral thyroiditis is rising → After COVID and other viral infections, inflammation and autoimmune reactions are increasingly damaging the thyroid gland. Not everyone will stop medication. Some will reduce it. A few may come off it. But almost everyone improves when metabolism is corrected. Because most tablets provide T4 and without metabolic support, T4 can’t become T3.
